WOMEX Report Back: DubMC Asks Real World's Cheryl McEnaney for Her Highlights

What 3-4 WOMEX showcase artist discoveries stood out for you?

Oreka Oreka TX  -- their film is wonderful, and seeing how they played the unusual Basque txalaparta and cued themselves to the film was fascinating and kept my attention throughout their set
Brigada Retro Mishto -- these old guys were completely charming and seemed a rare glimpse into the 1920s, as well as probably a rare opp to see them all together in action, a la Buena Vista Social Club or Orchestra Baobab...they're not getting any younger -- but their spirit is marvelous!
Parno Graszt -- the authenticity and energy of this Roma group was so vividly apparent in their vibrant, high-energy performance.    I loved how they kept on singing out in the crowd after they'd finished their set and the stage was being cleared -- a great moment of spontaneity not often seen in the showcases.
Afenginn --  Off-site at a club I caught a set by this Danish band, with Frank London of the Klezmatics sitting in; they were an interesting fusion, really enjoyed.

I missed a lot of showcases on 2 nights due to meetings, but I also really enjoyed finally seeing Kiran Ahluwahlia in action, who I'd never seen perform before. It was great to see everyone.
